My MAME Budget

My wife will tell you that there are lots of little items that I used to make my cabinet that aren't listed below. I'm sure there are. I just don't remember all of them. But, here is an estimation of what I spent. If I were to do it all over again (which I just might!) I would be able to cut a lot of my expenses by doing it right. So, I wouldn't break four plexiglass sheets, I'd only need one.

What you could pay

Notes

Cabinet

$55

$0

$200

You might find a dead one for free, or you might want to locate a specific cabinet. You really shouldn't pay more than $100 for one (or you could just get the real thing).

Computer

$0

$0

$700

I used an older computer that I didn't need anymore. I didn't need to emulate anything post 1990.

Monitor

$0

$0

$500

You need a big one, but not high quality. I had a 19" that came with my old computer. A popular way to go is to get a refurb.

Particle board

$15

$0

$30

You might be able to use your existing control panel. Otherwise, particle board is pretty cheap.

Plexi for bezel

$25

$0

$25

Original was burned & scratched

Joysticks

$50

$20

$50

I bought 3 (one spare), and I didn't like them. I then bought 2 more.

Buttons

$20

$10

$40

Just depends on how many you want. There about a buck fifty apiece (but you have to have a minimum order amount when ordering from Happs or Wico).

Marquee light

$10

$0

$15

Do you want to marquee to light up?

Plexi for marquee

$40

$0

$10

You can use the one that came with your cabinet. I broke countless ones before I learned how to cut it properly.

T molding

$10

$0

$10

I bought way more than I needed (but I used it later)

Black spray paint

$25

$0

$30

Sometimes I screwed something up and had to re-spray it.

Blue latex (sides)

$11

$0

$11

A gallon is waaay too much!

Breadboard for kb hack

$5

$0

$5

Just made wiring easier.

Trackball

$20

$0

$150

I used a CompUSA special. You could go all the way with a Happs one.

Trackball cover, screws

$5

Makes the dressing look nice.

Twisty grip
