The Q*Bert Project: Installing a Control Panel Overlay
| Here's what the control panel looked like
when I got it. Considering that the side art was in extremely good condition,
I wanted to see if I could get the control panel to look as good. |
|
| After waiting long enough, I found a new
old stock (NOS)
control panel overlay (CPO) for auction on eBay. It was a reasonably good
deal at about $100. Notice that the player buttons aren't even completely
punched out. |
|
| I removed the old overlay from the control panel.
I then made sure that I completely sanded all of the adhesive off. I found that steel
wool really did wonders. I got the control panel as clean as possible, and then I
applied the overlay. You only get one chance to do this right! |
|
| And here was the end result. It looks sharp! The adhesive
didn't complete bond to the control panel at the edge (it does a 180 degree curve). However,
this inperfection is hardly noticable. Overall, the CP now looks like a 10 out of 10. This is the
final control panel, as pictured on the gallery page.
